There are many different job requirements for the fast food and restaurant industry and which requirements depend on the position you are applying for. No matter what job position, you are going to have to handle food at one point or another. Whether it is the counter people who bag and serve food to the sandwich makers or the cooks themselves, this is part of the job. The managerial tier also have to know how to deal with food and managers have to know all aspects, from cooking, to sandwiches, bagging and service.

While each fast food or restaurant job has its own responsibilities, there are some basic things you need to know about the jobs. One is that you have to be fast. People who are slow don't last long in the fast food and restaurant industry. You also have to do your job well, whether it's cooking meats to the right temperature without burning them, putting the right portions on each sandwich, or getting food out to the customer. You also have to be a team player. The saying; 'there is no I in team,' really holds true in the food services industry. Only by working together will a restaurant run smoothly and have customers that are satisfied.

The best part is that people are always hungry. And someone needs to cook, and serve and clean up after them. That’s why talented cooks, cashiers, servers and managers will always be in demand for restaurant and fast food jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there are nearly 11.5 million Americans who work in the restaurant industry. Wages vary; $8.50 an hour is average for a fast-food cook job, while top chefs make as much as $32 an hour.
