Jobs in retail sales can be a rewarding experience though. A retail sales person gets hands on experience in meeting and greeting clients, and asking questions to find out what the customer is hoping to purchase. Retail sales also requires a great deal of patience and friendly attitude, since customers may often be rushed or rude.

Based on the customer's responses to questions, the salesperson will suggest different items from the store's inventory that will meet the needs of the customer. Because of this, the salesperson must work to keep a thorough knowledge of items that are sold in the store and how these items are used, because the customer may ask for a demonstration or explanation.

Retail sales people may also be required to do a certain amount of stocking, cleaning and arranging inventory in display cases or windows. Some stores require that their sales staff either package or gift wrap customer's purchases.

The wages for retail sales jobs are $12 per hour, on average (although you may earn less if you have little experience). Retail sales managers earn an average of $19 an hour. To succeed in jobs in retail, you’ll need to be organized, friendly, dependable and calm – even when the Black Friday bargain hunters start banging on the door
