There are many different jobs in customer service. There are restaurant jobs, hairstylists, hotel desk clerks, retail sales, flight attendants, or just about any job where you work directly with consumers. It doesn't stop there either. Even doctors, chiropractors, and other people who work in the health care industry also work in customer service to some extent. Even people who are behind the scenes, like someone who cleans up hotel rooms, are in customer service.

Each type of customer service job has different descriptions, but here are some basic job requirements. For one thing, if you are dealing directly with customers, you have to be good at your job. A waitress has to be fast, take orders accurately, and try to get food to people in a timely manner. Since you are dealing with people all the time, you have to have good people skills. Good communication means you listen well, and deal with even the rudest people with a polite smile. Even if someone isn't nice to you, you have to be nice to them. You can't bring your own problems to work, and you have to be able to handle customer complaints.

If you’ve got the patience of a saint, a passion for helping others, and an endless supply of cheer, customer service jobs could just be in your future. A part-time customer service job or a retail customer service job offers competitive pay, room for advancement, and a flexible schedule. In fact, about 17% of people working in customer service work part time. Those with customer service jobs are able to conduct themselves professionally, remain courteous under stress, and have excellent verbal and listening skills.
