Green tea has been around and used medicinally for more than 5000 years. Worldwide, it is the second most consumed beverage when made as a tea with the first being water. Green tea has been popular in India and China for many years, but was not as popular in the Western world until recent studies and research suggested it might have weight loss benefits.
Weight Loss Studies on Green Tea
There are clinical studies that confirm that the presence of catechins in the green tea itself may increase a person's metabolism and thus help with weight loss. Additionally, research has shown that green tea taken with other caffeine products helps promotes weight loss further. Green tea itself has some caffeine in it, but not as much as coffee or colas, which is the very reason many people drink the tea. If you are sensitive to caffeine, adding additional caffeine may not be an option for you.
Other studies have speculated that because green tea is a natural antioxidant and is so good for the body in general that is can lead to weight loss as the body becomes healthier. If you check the diet sections in any health food store, you are sure to find several that contain green tea.
Ways to Consume Green Tea
The traditional way to consume green tea is via a brewed tea that ingested, hot or cold. Most people find the taste of green tea not overbearing, but not very pleasant upon their first cup of tea, it is an acquired taste, but soon you will be quite fond of it and enjoy the taste very much.
Green tea also comes in capsule form; many companies sell the
standardized extract version so you are getting more of the active
ingredients. Extracts are useful if you simply cannot get used to the
taste or drinking tea in general is not something you enjoy. Most people
that are using green tea for weight loss purposes consume the extract
capsules rather than drinking the tea itself.
Green tea also comes
as a dried whole leaf in a capsule form, but to get the same benefits as
the extract, more capsules must be consumed.
Taking green tea in any form will not cause massive amounts of weight loss and therefore it should not be viewed as a magic bullet to winning the battle of the bulge. However, even if green tea provides minimal weight loss benefits, the other healthful ingredients make up for it.
Final Thoughts
On a final note, if you are consuming green tea on a daily basis for weight loss, you are also protecting yourself from certain kinds of cancer, high cholesterol, and heart disease. Green tea should be looked at as something you can consume everyday for the rest of your life, and has many health benefits, which does include some weight loss, but the weight loss is secondary to the other health benefits.
